Why does QuickTime only play audio but no video? How to fix it?

Question: Why does Quicktime only play audio but no video?

I am having serious problems with Quicktime. It will only play audio but there is no picture. I have tried re-installing but no joy. I realise that there are hundreds of people with the same problem but does anybody have a solution apart from reinstalling?

Answer

I thought it may have been a codec problem. Because QuickTime only supports MPEG-4 & H.264 video formats. You may learn more QuickTime supported video formats here.

If the video/movie files you want to view are in a format that is not supported by QuickTime, you may get the Perian and Flip4Mac plugins and QuickTime will be able to play most files you encounter, but if it still can't then try VLC or MPlayer.

We strongly recommend you use VLC Media Player which is a free and open source cross-platform media player supporting most audio and video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS, MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac, ...) from files, physical media (DVDs, VCD, Audio-CD), TV capture cards and many network streaming protocols.
